SHARING RESOURCES ACROSS THE REGIONS.
Headquartered at Gallaudet University, the Office of National Outreach initiates, leads, and supports outreach efforts through its Gallaudet University Regional Centers (GURCs) to address the educational, transitional, and professional development needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, their families, and the educators and other professionals who work with them throughout the United States and its territories.
Through partnerships with the GURCs host institutions, the regional centers share Gallaudet’s undergraduate and graduate programs and the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center’s resources and expertise through training programs, technical assistance, and consultation. The Regional Centers, their host institutions, and their locations are:
· East: Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, Massachusetts
· Midwest: John A. Logan College, Carterville, Illinois
· South: Austin Community College, Austin, Texas
· West: Ohlone College, Fremont, California
The GURCs foster opportunities for collaborative relationships and innovative projects between Gallaudet and other educational institutions, governments, and non-profit agencies at a local level.
WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING PROGRAMS
Specialized workshops focusing on literacy, family involvement, youth empowerment and college/career readiness skills are also offered through the GURCs. Additional workshops can be arranged to address a particular need. Two of our notable training series, among various workshops and programs, are the Youth Empowerment training and the Career and College Readiness training.
Youth Empowerment training is designed to empower students as leaders to share their knowledge and experience with the world. Participants are encouraged to connect with other individuals, discover one another’s cultures, and influence their communities. Each participant will be provided with a workbook that includes icebreaker activities, individual expressions, partner/group discussions, critical thinking skills, self-assessments, and self-reflections.
Career and College Readiness training is designed to prepare students for life beyond high school. The presenter will explore various postsecondary options and discuss necessary steps to take during and after high school in order to become a successful deaf adult. Participants and their parents will spend time focusing on developing valuable skills needed to thrive and to be ready for college and work. Participants will discuss ways to balance their academic, social and work experiences. Most importantly, each participant will be inspired to talk about their hopes and dreams for their future.
CONFERENCES
Each year, the GURCs provide support to the planning and execution of a multitude of conferences nationwide. Services provided involve providing workshops, making regional and national connections, moderating panels and discussions, event planning, and more.
GURCs provide support to, and attend, conferences that have an impact on deaf and hard of hearing individuals including the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) conference, the National Outreach Conference (NOC), and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD).
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE/CONSULTATION
GURCs offer assistance to schools, programs, and agencies interested in providing workshops, extension courses, and other specialized training. They also provide information related to the education of deaf and hard of hearing students in their region from preschool through adulthood.
GURC staff members act in an advisory capacity at their host institutions. They are involved with professional and consumer organizations and serve on advisory boards for agencies and organizations which have an impact on services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
